Supreme Court of India clerkship

A year in judicial research

From September 2021 to September 2022, Parth Singh served as a Law Clerk-cum-Research Assistant in the office of Justice M.M. Sundresh at the Supreme Court of India. His responsibilities included legal research, matter summaries and assistance with legal drafts. The appointment followed his B.A. LL.B. at Jindal Global Law School, completed in 2021.

Research and preparation

Parth researched authorities, summarized matters and assisted with assigned drafts. The work required organizing legal questions, procedural material and relevant decisions into concise research.

The companion judicial-research chapter explains how an issue and its authorities can be organized, using a clearly labelled hypothetical teaching example.

Role and professional responsibility

The role placed Parth in a judicial office for a year of research assistance. It is a distinct professional appointment within a chronology that also includes Indian advocacy, postgraduate study and later cross-border work.

The next professional steps

After the clerkship, Parth joined Hammurabi & Solomon Partners as an Associate in Dispute Management and Litigation from November 2022 to February 2023. He then assisted litigation in the office of the Advocate General of Punjab from February to August 2023.

His Office of Advocate Partap Singh relationship continued through separately dated roles before the Columbia study break.

Questions carried into scholarship

Parth’s subsequent writing addresses sentencing and criminal procedure. Determination of Sentences in India: Policy and Practice appeared online in August 2023. From Silence to Justice, coauthored with Vaibhav Yadav, examines Section 313 questioning and the right to remain silent.
